Dot Distribution of Farms in 2002

Dot distribution maps illustrate a given attribute by representing density by a point or a dot. A single dot correlates to a specific number of a given attribute. In the pictoral, the number of farms across the United States is represented by 200 farms per dot or point.

Propaganda: Deceitful ways to constray your enemy

Propaganda maps are images that are intentionally used to mislead the reader or a particular party. In 1934, a propaganda map created by the Nazi's under the rule of Adolf Hitler, illustrated the supposed threat of the neighboring Czechoslovakia. The map shows some of the groundwork laid by the Nazis to convince the German public opinion that it was the Czechoslovak side that was responsible for the ‘threat’, indicating that the range of Czechoslovak bomber planes include most of Germany’s territory. It’s subtitled: “Ein Kleinstaat bedroht Deutschland” (’A small state threatens Germany’).

Hypsometric Pictoral: France

Through the use of shading gradients, Hypsometric maps represent changes in elevation of an area terrain. Hypsometric colors are most common in topographic maps at small scales, either applied as continuous gradients or intervals. The cartographer has to choose the number of different color classes, their limiting contour lines and the colors.
Generally, relatively light colors are preferable and the basic principle "higher is brighter" is advice worth heeding. (Right) The color scheme designed for the hypsometric map of France by R. Leuzinger. Higher elevation is represented by brighter shading, while elevations closer to sea level are more of a natural low toned gradient.

Public Land Survey System (PLSS)

The Public Land Survey System (PLSS) is a way of subdividing and describing land in the United States. The PLSS typically divides land into 6-mile-square townships, which is the level of information included in the National Atlas. Townships are subdivided into 36 one-mile- square sections. Sections can be further subdivided into quarter sections, quarter-quarter sections, or irregular government lots. Normally, a permanent monument, or marker, is placed at each section corner. Monuments are also placed at quarter-section corners and at other important points, such as the corners of government lots. Today permanent monuments are usually inscribed tablets set on iron rods or in concrete. The original PLSS surveys were often marked by wooden stakes or posts, marked trees, pits, or piles of rock, or other less-permanent markers.

Thematic Map: Population Distribution

Thematic maps show distribution of a single attribute (characteristic) or the relationship between several attributes. Thematic maps can cover a variety of characteristics from soil types to population densities... (Above) 1990 Population Distribution in the United States

Planimetric Map of the World, 300 Million Years Ago

Based on a two-demensionional design, where only horizontal positions are illustrated. Vertical or three demensional vertices are not shown to simply convey a notion of relativity in spatial interactions.

Los Angeles three-dimensional mental map of fear

Mental mapping visualizes the imaginary maps people carry in their minds to navigate in geographic space.
Mountain and green areas represent zones perceived as comfortable; valleys and canyons in red represent areas perceived as "feared."
